History of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science

The Perot Museum is relatively young by museum standards, with its doors opening in December 2012. However, its roots stretch back to the Dallas Museum of Natural History (established in 1936) and the Science Place (founded in 1946), which along with the Dallas Children's Museum, merged to form the science and nature powerhouse we know today. The Perot Museum is named after Margot and Ross Perot, thanks to a significant donation from the Perot family that greatly contributed to the museum's development.

It was designed by the renowned architectural firm Morphosis Architects, led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne. Striving to be more than a repository of artifacts, the museum has swiftly become a hub for lifelong learning and a symbol of Dallas's commitment to fostering an environment where science thrives.

Why is the Perot Museum of Nature and Science Important?

Feel the necessity to understand our natural surroundings? The Perot Museum serves this very desire; it bridges the gap between academic science and the public with its dynamic and interactive exhibits. As climate change and scientific literacy become increasingly pressing issues, the museum stands as an educational bulwark, instilling a sense of stewardship and curiosity for our planet. It also acts as a social epicenter where families, schoolchildren, and researchers converge to explore and exchange ideas. Would you have guessed that a museum could play such a critical role in establishing a scientifically informed community?
