The 16-story structure consists of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs, nearly 2,500 individual steps, and 80 landings, creating a labyrinth of pathways that rise above the plaza. Radiating a bronzed steel and concrete allure, this centerpiece of the Hudson Yards is not just an architectural marvel but also a social space for city dwellers and visitors alike to engage with each other and the dynamic cityscape.
History of The Vessel
The Vessel's inception was part of the larger Hudson Yards redevelopment project, a plan to revitalize the west side of Manhattan. Breaking ground in April 2017, it was part of the first phase of the project, which aimed to transform the area into a vibrant, urban hotspot. The structure was unveiled to the public in March 2019 after much anticipation.
Designed with an intent to create a new kind of public landmark, Heatherwick Studio sought to make something that all visitors could use, touch, and climb – not just to admire from afar. The impact was immediate; upon opening, The Vessel became an iconic figure in New York City’s architectural and cultural panorama, drawing countless visitors eager to explore its unique form and views.
Why is The Vessel Important?

Firstly, it's a significant addition to New York's already diverse architectural landscape, providing a bold, contemporary contrast to the historic buildings and traditional skyscrapers surrounding it. It's a symbol of New York's forward-thinking and ever-evolving character, representing the city's ambitions to create a more connected and accessible urban environment.
Furthermore, it serves as a public gathering place, encouraging community engagement and physical activity through its climbable design. The Vessel represents the importance of innovative public spaces that challenge traditional urban layouts, promoting interaction and offering unique city experiences. It's not simply a structure to be seen; it's an experience to partake in, inviting visitors to become part of the city's fabric.
