What is Wat Chedi Luang?

Wat Chedi Luang is a historic Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is one of the most iconic and significant temples in the city and holds great cultural and religious importance. The temple, also known as the "Temple of the Great Stupa," is renowned for its impressive architecture and ancient ruins.

History of Wat Chedi Luang

The history of Wat Chedi Luang dates back to the 14th century when it was built during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma. The temple was originally intended to house the Emerald Buddha, but it was later moved to its current location in Bangkok. Despite this, Wat Chedi Luang remained an important spiritual center and was expanded over the years.

During the 15th century, the temple underwent further renovations and enhancements under the reign of King Tilokaraj. The construction of the main pagoda, which gives the temple its name, was completed during this period. Standing at an impressive height of over 80 meters, the pagoda was once one of the tallest structures in ancient Lanna Kingdom.

Unfortunately, an earthquake in the 16th century caused significant damage to the pagoda, resulting in the collapse of its upper section. The temple complex was also partially destroyed. Despite these setbacks, Wat Chedi Luang remains a cherished historical and religious site.
